The Cats

Meet the resident cats of the Cativerse

Pixel is 14 years old and was a feral rescue as a kitten from a literal historic insane asylum. He will unalive you for a treat without a second thought. His favorite pastime is basking in the sun after eating every last morsel in his bowl and an obsession with chewing on the ribbon cable connecting the camera to my 3D printer. He also has an affinity for “guitar pets”. Contrary to popular belief, he cannot walk through walls. He can however, break into a very secure grow tent and eat the entirety of two 3 month old cannabis plants.

Percival “Purry” Murray was airdropped into our lives through unfortunate circumstances via the Cat Distribution System.

Murray does not like any part of him touched by hands except for the top of his head, but if you sneak up behind him and snuggle him gently, he will fall asleep purring and lay with you for hours.

In his spare time, Purry Murray enjoys annoying the other cats and blending in with the flooring so we trip on him.

Purry Murray is loosely named after Delores Herbig‘s cat Murray from the TV show Dead Like Me.

Samson aka Gordon Scramsey was a neighborhood feral who stopped by daily for food and eventually pets. My daughter adopted him after he made it very clear he was done being an outdoor cat and kept making moves to come inside on his own. Like Pixel and Murray, he now has all his shots, chip and has been neutered.

Samson is known for running around the house at high speed and crashing into walls while trilling loudly for maximum attention. While seemingly very smart, he still has not figured out that you can’t catch a laser dot.

Gone but never forgotten

Q, the stoic Queen of the Cativerse (2009-2025). Named after the Star Trek character, she was one of three kittens I brought home from a horse farm in 2009 after I saw an ad for them on Craigslist.

She was always her own; never really snuggly or affectionate, but always prowling around investigating everything; tail held high with a curve at the end like a question mark. Q was beautiful and fluid and graceful. I always thought of her coloring as Sepia toned, so I dubbed her the sepia tiger.

Leo (2013-2024) was adopted through Second Chance Sheltering Network in 2015 with his 15 year old brother Rumpole.

Leo was a quirky cat who quickly formed Team Orange with Pixel and Rumpole. Often called by variations of the nickname Sir Chompsalot due to his affinity for biting anything that even mildly annoyed him.

Lord Shadow aka Shadow (2009-2022) was adopted from a horse barn with his two sisters, Q and Braveheart.

Shadow was my fluffy little man. Very affectionate and always up for a snuggle. I dubbed him Mr. Dainty Paws because he absolutely refused to use any litter box that had been touched by another cat and when not napping or snuggling, could always be found grooming himself.

Braveheart (2009-2021) was an adorable little tuxedo cat. She was a fiercely lovable cat who brought joy to everyone around her. She rarely if ever meowed. If there was a sunbeam available, you would find her rolling around in it.

Unfortunately due to losing a lot of personal items recently, I have very few photos of her that I can find. She is pictured here to the left on my XP’s desk, hanging with Q.

Rumpole (2000-2016) was an adorable orange cat adopted from Second Chance in 2015 with his brother, Leo. Rumpole was a senior cat and very frail when we adopted him after his lifelong human passed away suddenly. I hope we gave him a good last year of his life. Rumpole passed away of leukemia about a year after we adoped him. I will add his photo when and if I locate my missing backup drive.
